Extracurricular & Leadership Activities
Law schools will assess an applicant’s achievement in extracurricular activities in college. Get involved in something that genuinely interests you. Quality over quantity is key. Take on a leadership role. This demonstrates commitment and a depth of involvement. Your extracurricular activities do not have to relate to the law. Do what you enjoy!
Volunteer your time with a student organization or community organization. This shoes a commitment to service and your willingness to invest in your campus and community.
The student organizations listed below are popular with pre-law students. Many students will attend law school without being involved in the organizations listed. Do what works best for you and suits your interests.
- Mock Trial – “Throughout our fall & spring seasons we send teams to compete against other universities
in tournaments across the country. This past year, our program placed seventh at Nationals,
a huge feat in the mock trial community. UGA Mock Trial has now placed within the
top ten at Nationals for the past two years. We’re ranked among the top fifteen teams
in the country, and we pride ourselves on our continued success by recruiting and
retaining talented members.”
- The Black Pre-Law Student Association - An organization at the University of Georgia to cultivate and foster community among
black students who are interested in attending law school.
- Kappa Alpha Pi - We are a co-ed pre-law fraternity designed to support undergraduate students who aspire
to pursue careers in the legal field. Unlike traditional fraternities, KAPi’s focus
is on helping its members prepare for law school and the legal profession. It offers
a range of resources, including academic support such as study groups and LSAT preparation,
networking opportunities with law students and professionals, and various activities
aimed at professional development, like mock trial competitions and legal workshops.
Members also engage in community service and philanthropic activities related to the
legal field while having the chance to assume leadership roles within the organization.
KAPi serves as a valuable platform for individuals seeking to explore and excel in
the legal profession during their college years.
- Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity - The purpose of this Pre-Law Fraternity shall be to form a strong bond uniting students
and teachers of the law with members of the Bench and Bar in a fraternal fellowship
designed to advance the ideals of liberty and equal justice under law; to stimulate
excellence in scholarship; to inspire the virtues of compassion and courage; to foster
integrity and professional competence; to promote the welfare of its members; and
to encourage their moral, intellectual, and cultural advancement; so that each member
may enjoy a lifetime of honorable professional and public service.
- The Phi Kappa Literary Society - The Phi Kappa Literary Society is a debate organization founded in 1820 at University
of Georgia. We meet once per week during the academic year to practice oratory, debate,
and creative writing. Our members strive to develop the necessary skills to present
their views in an articulate and logical fashion while discerning the strengths and
weakness of other positions. Through time spent in our Hall, we sharpen the public
speaking skills vital to success in the professional world. As members, we forge bonds
of friendship that will last a lifetime.
